Role Description:

We have a new opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our JORN program.

As the Mechanical Engineer working as part of the Antenna IPT team, you will be responsible for the designing the mechanical components and assemblies of HF antennas using CAD software. You will be required to conduct feasibility studies, simulations and stress analyses to validate designs as well as perform complex calculations, data analysis and modelling of simulations.

This role will see you supporting the manufacturing and production teams with technical guidance and troubleshooting as well as participate in all stages of production development.

Core Duties:

  • Design and development of antenna mechanical components and systems, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Perform simulations using FEA (Finite Element Analysis), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and other modelling tools to predict performance, optimize designs, and identify potential failure modes
  • Provide engineering solutions on time and within budget across multiple projects, from concept through to production
  • Produce and maintain accurate engineering drawings, specifications, and reports in compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements

Essential Skills:

  • Degree level qualifications in Mechanical Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical design and engineering in a professional environment
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Inventor), engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, MATLAB)
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and mechanical systems
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Defence security clearance or eligibility to obtain
  • Eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic In Arms (ITAR) regulations

The JORN Team

The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is a connected series of three remote over-the-horizon radars (OTHR) located in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The state-of-the-art defence system provides wide-area surveillance at ranges of 1,000 to 3,000 kilometres and plays a vital role in supporting the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) air and maritime operations, border protection, disaster relief and rescue operations.
