Role: Technician – Construction and Trades

Location: Bedford College – Cauldwell Street Campus

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £23,557 and £26,754 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

About the role:

We are currently seeking a Technician in Construction and Trades to join our Construction department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Technician, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

  • Workshop & Lecturer Support – Provide practical assistance to lecturers and trainers in Plumbing and wider Construction workshops, helping learners develop skills and supporting them toward qualification achievement.
  • Tools, Equipment & Workshop Maintenance – Maintain, repair and service tools and equipment, manage consumables, prepare work areas and ensure the workshop remains clean, safe and hazard‑free at all times.
  • Stock Control & Systems Management – Develop and maintain secure stock systems, manage sign‑in/out processes, complete annual inventories, process purchase requisitions and monitor expenditure against budgets.
  • Safety, Discipline & Compliance – Uphold health & safety, COSHH and safeguarding requirements, address student behaviour appropriately and ensure workshop operations comply with college policies and regulations.
  • CollegeWide Support & Professional Duties– Assist with marketing and engagement events, support site security, collaborate with staff across the department and undertake additional duties as required by the Head of Construction.

About you:

  • Qualifications & Industry Experience – Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in a construction trade, GCSE‑level English and Maths (or willingness to achieve), with hands‑on experience working within the construction industry and knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Technical & Workshop Skills – Able to maintain stock inventories, prepare, repair and service tools and equipment, and apply knowledge of wider construction trades and current industry practices.
