Job purpose:
The post holder is responsible for actively supporting the delivery of Naval Technical Training (NTT) in the Seamanship field at the Technical Institute of Naval Studies (TINS). This includes classroom and/or seamanship laboratory/workshop requirements pertinent to the smooth operation of the Seamanship Laboratories, the Forecastle (FX) and Quarterdeck (QD) training platforms, Marina Training Facility (MTF) and supporting infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
The post holder is responsible for:
• assisting the Seamanship Instructors and the Senior Seamanship Instructor (SSIs) in preparing for specialist practical training,
• assisting the Seamanship Instructors in general daily routines and tasks,
• ensuring all tasks given are carried out with full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) measures adhered to,
• ensure all Health & Safety legislation/documentation is followed to prevent accidents/incidents,
• ensuring all classroom, laboratory and workshop practical demonstrations and exercises are set up prior to the commencement of lessons,
• carry out daily ‘after use’ checks in all Seamanship Laboratories and on the FX and QD training platforms, reporting any anomalies to the SSIs,
• assist in maintaining equipment in assigned areas,
• when required, assist in the delivery of Sea Sense practical training at the MTF or TINS swimming pool,
• ensuring support and supervision of cadets is provided during assessments and evaluation exercises,
• liaising with the Seamanship Instructors on best practice to support the planned delivery of lessons.
In addition to the above, the post holder will be well motivated, adaptable and flexible to be able to operate in a complex technical environment, where the integration of a wide range of technical skills is necessary to ensure the prime objectives of NTT are met, with minimum supervision.
The post holder will be expected to operate to a standard of absolute integrity and professionalism.
The post holder will ensure the completion of any other reasonable request by their line manager, which aligns with Company business.
Job Requirements:
Essential
The post holder must:
• Must have evidence of a Maritime, Nautical or seafaring background/experience
• have a single pillar assessed English Language ability to IELTS 4.0 in speaking, and a minimum of IELTS 3.0 in reading and writing, achieved within the last 2 years, and
• Have a minimum of 1 years employment or experience within the training environment.
Desirable
The post holder should:
• hold RYA L2 qualification,
• have some knowledge of Seamanship, whether military or civilian,
• Have a recognized train the trainer qualification.
