Job Title: Foster Carer

Location: Home-based

Reports To: Supervising Social Worker

Job Overview:

A foster carer provides a safe, stable, and supportive home for children and young people who cannot live with their birth families. They play a vital role in their emotional, social, and educational development while working closely with social services and other professionals to meet the child’s needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Providing Care & Support:

  • Offer a loving and secure environment for the child.
  • Support the child’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
  • Encourage personal development, self-esteem, and independence.
  • Support educational needs, including attending school meetings and helping with homework.
  • Promote healthy routines, including meals, hygiene, and bedtime schedules.

Safeguarding & Advocacy:

  • Ensure the child is safe and protected from harm.
  • Understand and follow safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Advocate for the child’s rights and needs in meetings with social workers, schools, and healthcare providers.

Building Positive Relationships:

  • Encourage positive family contact when appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with birth families, social workers, and other professionals.
  • Help the child develop healthy relationships and social skills.

Record-Keeping & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of the child’s progress and daily life.
  • Attend meetings and provide reports when required.
  • Communicate any concerns to the supervising social worker.

Training & Development:

  • Attend mandatory training sessions and refresher courses.
  • Participate in support groups and development programs.
  • Continuously improve skills to meet the needs of different children.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • A stable and nurturing home environment.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors with patience and understanding.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child welfare.
  • A willingness to work with professionals and attend training.

Desirable:

  • Experience in childcare, healthcare, or education.
  • Understanding of trauma and attachment issues.
  • Knowledge of fostering regulations and guidelines.
