Reports To: Supervising Social Worker
Job Overview:
A foster carer provides a safe, stable, and supportive home for children and young people who cannot live with their birth families. They play a vital role in their emotional, social, and educational development while working closely with social services and other professionals to meet the child’s needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Providing Care & Support:
- Offer a loving and secure environment for the child.
- Support the child’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
- Encourage personal development, self-esteem, and independence.
- Support educational needs, including attending school meetings and helping with homework.
- Promote healthy routines, including meals, hygiene, and bedtime schedules.
Safeguarding & Advocacy:
- Ensure the child is safe and protected from harm.
- Understand and follow safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Advocate for the child’s rights and needs in meetings with social workers, schools, and healthcare providers.
Building Positive Relationships:
- Encourage positive family contact when appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with birth families, social workers, and other professionals.
- Help the child develop healthy relationships and social skills.
Record-Keeping & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of the child’s progress and daily life.
- Attend meetings and provide reports when required.
- Communicate any concerns to the supervising social worker.
Training & Development:
- Attend mandatory training sessions and refresher courses.
- Participate in support groups and development programs.
- Continuously improve skills to meet the needs of different children.
Requirements:
Essential:
- A stable and nurturing home environment.
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviors with patience and understanding.
- Commitment to safeguarding and child welfare.
- A willingness to work with professionals and attend training.
Desirable:
- Experience in childcare, healthcare, or education.
- Understanding of trauma and attachment issues.
- Knowledge of fostering regulations and guidelines.
