Chief Metrologist Engineering Services

JOB PURPOSE
To function as the Metrology and Calibration (MetCal) Engineering Services Chief Metrologist responsible for directing and monitoring the performance of a team of Mechanical, Radio Frequency/Microwave, and Electronic and ATE engineering support specialists.
To ensure the activities performed by the engineering services department is being accomplished in accordance with RSAF Instruction 4-7168, and other RSAF directives.
BAE Systems is the UK Government’s nominated Prime Contractor under the Government-to-Government arrangements that are in place to provide equipment, support and training to Saudi Arabia. We provide maintenance of Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) aircraft and train RSAF and Royal Saudi Naval Force personnel safely in a training environment in how to use their aircraft, equipment and weapons.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Assists the RSAF in the running and supervision of the MetCal Engineering Services at KAAB, Dhahran in accordance with RSAF Instruction 4-7168.
Checks the operational performance of existing and new MetCal test and calibration resources and recommends enhancement upgrades, new functions, new procedures etc., to ensure maximum utilization.
Recommends procurement of additional MetCal equipment and computer automation, based on engineering reviews and studies, to meet future RSAF MetCal support tasks.
Determines suitable substitutes when critical laboratory equipment is not available or awaiting repairs/certification and validates status of new software patches written by subordinate Engineering Staff.
Directs the troubleshooting of specialised calibration/repair problems which require engineering solutions beyond the capabilities of the Secondary Calibration Squadron (SCS) Technicians and monitors corrective action.
Verifies, when required, condemnation of equipment which is deemed to be unreliable, unsupportable and/or beyond technical repair.
Coordinates and communicates between equipment users, engineering specialists and the Operations Manager/RSAF to ensure the successful outcome of multi disciplinary engineering support tasks.
Prepares feasibility studies, logical drawings, complex calculations and studies to assist the RSAF in the evaluation of new weapons support requirements, where no previous MetCal capability exists or an existing capability requires upgrading.
Originates technical specifications and local calibration procedures, which equal or surpass USAF 33K Series and/or UK T.O.s/APs, where no other procedures are available integrating the contributions from other engineering specialists and equipment users as deemed appropriate.
Controls and supervises engineering staff assigned to MetCal and inspects work in progress to ensure that professional metrological standards are maintained. Offers advice, technical assistance, leadership and tasking to MetCal engineers and calibration technicians as necessary. Submits recommendations for technical improvements, changes to calibration procedures, laboratory assets etc., through the Operations Manager, for overall integration into the RSAF MetCal programs.
Provides counterpart training to RSAF Officers as and when required, assessing the knowledge and skills attained.
Attends metrological Seminars, MetCal Review Meetings, Laboratory evaluation audits and executive management meetings as deemed appropriate by the Operations Manager/RSAF. Attendance will, in most cases, require submission of an out-briefing report to MetCal.
This position is under the direction of the Operations Manager/RSAF and carries the responsibility for routine executive functions (e.g. Acting Operations Manager) whenever requested to do so by the Operations Manager
RECRUITMENT SPECIFICATION
Will have successfully completed a formal training course directed towards the calibration, repair and alignment of Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE).
Will have in depth professional experience of mechanical, electro/mechanical and electronic measuring principles, including analogue and digital instrumentation, with practical experience of precision calibration. Previous experience as a team leader in a multi-parameter instrumentation calibration environment being ideal.
Will be fully conversant with the requirements of RSAF Instruction 4-7168, RSAF Metrology Program and RSAF Instruction 4-14201 (formally RSAF Manual 78-2), RSAF Ground Safety Manual. A working knowledge of RSAF Manual 67-1, RSAF Supply system would be advantageous.
Will hold a University Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Physics or other qualifications agreed with the MetCal Wing Commander.
Must have the ability to compile, collate and prepare letters and reports.
Must be familiar with, and be able to use, Microsoft Office software applications and have the aptitude for future upgrade training as necessary.
